Dental Hygiene

When it comes to dental hygiene, you might think that you’re doing a great job by brushing your teeth a couple of times each day. However, because it’s such a part of your daily routine, it can be easy to make some mistakes after awhile. Be mindful of the following tips to ensure that your brushing is effective.

With the tips below, brushing your teeth can be more effective. Talk with a dental professional at Wineburg Family Dentistry about more ways to maintain good dental hygiene and a winning smile.

1. Use The Proper Toothbrush

When’s the last time you changed your toothbrush? If you don’t know, it’s probably time to change it. The bristles can become worn down over time, so it’s good to get a new brush every six months or so; you might want to replace it every time you see your dentist.

It’s also important to know what kind of toothbrush to use. You may think that hard bristles are great, but be aware that brushing too hard with those bristles could, as time passes, wear away some of the hard enamel on your teeth. Instead, opt for soft bristles.

2. Start In Different Places

You may not realize this, but you probably start at precisely the same place every time you begin your brushing regiment. If you’re like a lot of people, you might start out with a lot of vigor in that one spot, only to slow down as you work your way around your mouth. To make sure that all your teeth get enough attention, make a concerted effort to start brushing in a different location every time you begin the task.

3. Brush For A Few Minutes

It’s also vital that you’re spending enough time brushing. This can be tough, especially if you’re trying to get out the door in the morning or just want to go to bed, but making enough time for brushing means that you’re more likely to clean all surfaces of your teeth. You should be brushing for about two minutes total, which is a little less than a typical commercial break during one of your favorite tv shows.
